# Set Default Using The Next Instruction

A modifier instruction - it doesn't add elements itself. Instead, it marks whichever element the *next* instruction adds as the default selection for that set. Most commonly used on a title selectable, so a Workview opens with a sensible element already chosen rather than whatever happens to be first in the list.

The title selectable shows all three years as options, but opens defaulted to `2024` rather than `2023`.

::: warning A cached selection in local storage takes precedence
MODLR caches a user's selected element in the browser's local storage for selectables, so the same selectable reopens with whatever a user last picked rather than the default every time. If a cached selection already exists for that dimension, it's used instead of the element this instruction marks as default - `Set Default Using The Next Instruction` only takes effect when there's no cached selection to fall back on (e.g. a first visit, or a cleared browser). Whether that caching happens, and whether you can turn it off, depends on where the selectable lives:

* **Workview title selectables** always persist, with no way to turn it off.
* **Dashboard selectables** persist when configured to update dimension context, but not when configured to update a variable instead - see [Dashboard Overview](/technical/dashboard-overview).
* **Card selectables** are the only ones with an explicit **Persist** property (`Yes`/`No`) - see [Selectable](/card-guides/selectable). Turn it off if you need `Set Default Using The Next Instruction` to win every time, regardless of what a user picked previously.
